3 Writing Habits that Will Make You a Successful Christian Authorpreneur

The key to becoming a successful Christian Authorpreneur is to first become an author. As a Christian Authorpreneur, your writing habits can significantly impact your ability to create inspiring content that resonates with readers and builds a thriving Authorpreneur platform. YOUR BOOK HAS PURPOSE! It’s the answer to someone’s prayer. Keep this truth at the forefront of your mind. Here are 3 writing habits that will help you along your journey to becoming a successful Christian Authorpreneur:

Habit 1: Write at least ONE WORD A DAY.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson once said, “Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.” But what if for you, consistency is the hard work?

Cultivating a consistent writing routine is key when it comes to developing your writing skills. With the countless everyday responsibilities Christian women have as wives, moms, CEOs, business owners, and let’s not downplay the role we play as the “strong friend”, finding the time to write every day can become a struggle. Finding a writing routine that works for you and sticking to it is no easy feat. I get it! That’s why in 2014 while writing my first book, From Nothing to New York, I made a promise to God (not myself – because I break promises to me all the time) to write ONE word a day. You read that correctly – ONE word a day. No matter how tired I was…how late I arrived home…how busy my schedule became, etc, etc. I told God I would write ONE word every day, and that’s exactly what I did! Sometimes I only wrote one word, and other times, I logged onto my computer thinking I only had the mental capacity to produce one word, and sentences or paragraphs would flow out of me!

The benefit of me making such a “small” commitment to God all those years ago is that it built a discipline within me that has lasted till today. Developing the discipline to write even when you don’t feel like it or are faced with unexpected distractions is what births successful Christian Authorpreneurs! The tenacity and discipline you receive through your writing journey is able to be applied in every other area of your life and business. I’m a living witness!

For you, writing one word a day may be the first commitment you need to make in creating a successful writing habit. Or, maybe setting aside dedicated time each day or week to write may be more beneficial for you. No matter what route you decide to take – by making writing a regular habit, you will strengthen your creative muscle and make progress on your writing projects. Embrace discipline as a way to honor God’s instructions and to inspire others through your words. Remember, the objective is to birth your book and then become a successful Christian Authorpreneur!

Habit 2: Embrace the Power of Reading.

I once heard a friend say, “Great writers are avid readers,” and that quote stuck with me.

I never knew my love for reading inevitably strengthened my gift of writing. For me, reading became an unintentional habit. A few of my favorite genres include – Christian Self-Help, Christian Personal Growth, Christian Inspirational, and Christian Spiritual Growth – with my favorite author being TD Jakes. And while Christian and faith-based books are my favorite genre, as writers, it’s beneficial to make it a habit of reading widely and deeply, both within and outside the Christian genre. Explore different styles, genres, and authors to broaden your perspective and gain insights into effective storytelling techniques. Reading widely will enhance your vocabulary, expose you to fresh ideas, and spark your creativity for your own writing journey. The goal is never to plagiarize or be influenced by another author’s writings, but to be inspired. While writing my books, I don’t read in similar genres as the ones I’m writing. Sounds weird, right? Well, I have to give my mind a break – and, I don’t want to accidentally infuse somebody else’s voice or ideas into my own. So yes, read to enhance your writing. But be careful while doing so!

Habit 3: Invest in Continuous Learning and Support.

Writing is an ever-evolving craft, and there is always room for growth. As Christians, we want to be good stewards over every gift, idea, and assignment God has blessed us with the opportunity to partner with Him in. Invest in your continuous learning by attending online courses, workshops, conferences, and webinars that focus on developing your writing skillset or dive deeper into the specific topic you’ve chosen for your book. Always remember – RESEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND!

Also, joining Christian writer/author communities is a life hack for any aspiring author because you can receive feedback on your work, engage in constructive discussions with fellow writers that expand your perspective, and you’re able to receive support from individuals that can hold you accountable and encourage along your journey to authorship and authorpreneurship. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion for Jesus and obedience…for writing and faith. A supportive author community can provide valuable insights, accountability, and encouragement during both the highs and lows of your journey. Remember, you are not alone on this path; there are others walking alongside you.

In conclusion, becoming a successful Christian Authorpreneur requires a combination of writing skills, business acumen, intentional relationships, and a strong foundation of faith. By cultivating consistent writing habits, embracing discipline, reading widely, investing in continuous learning, and joining an author community, you can set yourself up for success in the world of Christian authorship. Remember to seek God first and keep God first. He’s got you and He will guide you.
